Mous (pronounced Mouse, not Moose), are more well known for their robust phone cases designed to offer excellent protection for mobile devices. But they have, at some point over the last year, expanded their product range to include backpacks. I hadn't a clue about this until I saw Mous advertising a backpack on social media.
The company has a reputation for durability in mobile tech accessories and has so there is reason to have high expectations for its everyday carry items. Building on their success with phone cases, it seems Mous aims to provide the same level of protection and quality in their backpack offerings, tailoring their designs to cater to the modern urban commuter.
Mous are also quite well known for their, let say ‘unique’ promotional approach. Imagine a scene where someone is so confident in the protective quality of their gear that they toss their backpack off a tall building (or out of an F1 car) to test its durability. If you've seen their adverts, you'll know that this is precisely what Mous do to prove their products' toughness. (No backpacks were thrown during the writing of my review). These kind of (often quite shouty) ads grab your attention. It cleverly highlights the robust nature of the Mous Day backpack, which I was tempted to buy after watching the aforementioned social media post.
Product Overview
The Mous Day backpack is a sleek-looking backpack designed with the needs of modern urbanites in mind. It has a minimalist design, created to blend seamlessly into both professional and casual settings. The Day backpack is available in several attractive colours, including Marine (the colour I chose), Midnight, Sage, and Stone.
The backpack is crafted from materials that resist light rain, ensuring the contents of the bag remain dry and secure in damp conditions. The best way I can describe the primary material is that it's rubbery and tightly woven. Whatever it’s made of, it is pleasant to the touch and gives the bag a feeling of durability.
The USP of the Mous Daypack is its ability to open entirely from the top to the bottom, providing hassle-free access to everything inside. This is facilitated by a dependable zipper mechanism that runs down the front of the backpack, making it easy to pack and retrieve items without the need to dig through layers, so long as you lay it flat on its back.
Inside the backpack, there’s a couple of dedicated, padded compartments, one of which can comfortably fit a laptop up to 16 inches. The base in this section suspends 3cm above ground, which should protect against potential damage when the backpack is placed down. Next to the second smaller but similarly structured compartment for a device such as a small tablet or Kindle. Additionally, there are organised sections and pockets made of thin, stretchy material to store smaller items like charging bricks, cables, pens, or maybe an SSD.
The straps of the Day backpack are lightly padded but are seemingly comfortable for prolonged carry. There is no sternum strap to help your shoulders deal with the weight of the bag and its contents, but I don't consider this a negative as this bag is designed to hold a minimum of stuff. It's not intended for you to cram it full of equipment.
The back panel is supposedly made from a breathable material to help reduce sweating, a thoughtful feature particularly as we enter the hot summer months at the time of this review (I write the word 'hot' with some hope; I live in the UK, after all!).
Besides the main compartments, the Day backpack includes discreet pockets, one on the front to the side and one hidden on the back, for valuable items like wallets and phones, adding an extra layer of security for important belongings.
On the left side of the bag (as you carry it) is a bottle/umbrella holder that expands with elasticated straps to hold larger sizes.
Pricing and Value
The Mous Day backpack is priced at around £114 at the time of this review, placing it in the mid-to-high range for backpacks designed with tech protection and everyday functionality in mind. This pricing reflects its design, materials, and the brand's reputation for durability.
Compared to other backpacks offering similar features such as laptop protection, water resistance, and ergonomic design, I believe the Mous Day backpack is justified in its pricing. In this price bracket, other well-known brands like Osprey, North Face, and Herschel supply models, offer only a little more, for not much more.
The backpack offers distinct advantages, such as its full accessibility, which is really handy feature that allows for easy packing and access. Additionally, its water-resistant and rubbery material provides durability and a secure environment for tech devices, which is obviously important for commuters and travellers.
Looking around the internet, you’ll find that the Day backpack has been well-received by users, particularly for its daily usability and adaptability across various scenarios. They have appreciated the structured yet flexible back panel, which enhances breathability.
