Readwise and Kindle: Revolutionise your Reading
Unleash the true potential of your reading experience with Readwise and Kindle working in harmony (A Take 2 series article)
In a world where technology has become integral to nearly everything we do, how we consume books and retain information has also evolved dramatically. Enter Readwise and Kindle - an app and a piece of technology that has greatly enhanced my reading experience. This communication combo helps me to process, retain, and apply the information I learn from books. In this article I share the benefits I've found from using the Readwise app and Amazon Kindle together, creating a seamless and enriching reading journey.*
The Power of Readwise
Readwise is a simple but powerful app that helps readers get the most out of their reading experience. It offers a convenient way to consolidate highlights, notes, and insights you make from various platforms such as Kindle, Apple Books, and even physical books. Then, using a unique algorithm, Readwise resurfaces these highlights at a rate you choose via email and the app. This makes reviewing, remembering, and applying the knowledge gained from what you've read much more manageable.
Some key features of Readwise:
Cross-platform integration: Readwise supports a wide range of platforms, including Kindle, Apple Books, Instapaper, some podcasting apps and even physical books through the Readwise iOS app's scanning feature.
Spaced repetition: Readwise utilises the spaced repetition technique. This evidence-based learning method optimises the time information is reviewed to maximise long-term retention. (More about spaced repetition HERE)
Customisable email digests: Users can receive daily or weekly emails containing their highlights to keep their learnings fresh and top of mind.
Export to note-taking apps: Readwise allows users to export their highlights to note-taking apps like Notion, Evernote, or Roam Research, making it simple to integrate insights into an existing workflow.
Make fancy graphics: Easily share your saved highlights on social media. Readwise can create a graphic with the book cover and relevant text to share in either square or landscape mode. It also offers some intelligent colour suggestions for simple customisation.
The Kindle Advantage
Amazon Kindle long ago established itself as a market leader in the world of e-readers, providing us with a vast library of books, newspapers, and magazines in a compact, user-friendly device. The Kindle simplifies reading and has many accessibility features, making reading enjoyable for everyone. Moreover, it allows you to take your entire library with you anywhere. And in recent years, with the addition of waterproofed versions, you can take these things safely to the beach or have a relaxing few moments in a bath full of bubbles!
Key features of Amazon Kindle:
E-ink display: Kindle's e-ink technology mimics the look of ink on paper. This reduces eye strain and provides a comfortable reading experience even in bright sunlight.
Customisation: Kindle allows users to adjust the font size, style, and line spacing to suit their preferences.
Built-in dictionary and translations: With a built-in dictionary and the ability to translate text into various languages, Kindle makes it easy to look up unfamiliar words or phrases without disrupting the reading flow.
Highlighting and note-taking: Kindle allows users to highlight passages and take notes directly within the text. This makes it easy to review and revisit important insights later (enter Readwise!).
The Perfect Symbiosis: Readwise and Kindle
When used together, the Readwise app and Kindle create a seamless and immersive reading experience that maximises the benefits of both platforms. Kindle's user-friendly interface, a vast library, and note-taking capabilities complement Readwise's ability to consolidate, review, and apply the knowledge acquired from reading.
The integration between Readwise and Kindle is simple and efficient. All you need to do is connect your Amazon account to your Readwise account, and your Kindle highlights will be automatically imported into the Readwise app. From there, you can enjoy the benefits of the aforementioned spaced repetition, email digests, and exporting your highlights to your preferred note-taking app for more in-depth research into your subject.
By leveraging the power of both platforms, readers can enjoy a personalised and immersive reading experience and take full advantage of the knowledge gained from books. So whether you are a casual reader or a lifelong learner, the Readwise and Kindle duo can help you unlock your reading potential and elevate your intellectual growth.
If you haven't yet explored the synergies between these two platforms, I encourage you to give it a go! You'll find yourself reading more efficiently, quickly retaining and recalling information, integrating your newfound insights into your daily life, or at least making yourself look wiser to your significant other. With Readwise and Kindle working hand in hand, you're set to embark on a transformative reading journey that will leave you inspired, informed, and eager to dive into your next literary adventure!
What's the cost?
My Kindle of choice is the most up-to-date Oasis version, which isn't cheap, starting at £229.99, but when you use it as much as I do, I think it is worth the investment. You can purchase a Kindle from as little as £84.99 right up to £329.99 (starting at) if you want the most recent version, the all-singing, all-dancing Kindle Scribe. For most people, I think you would be more than happy with the mid-tier Kindle Paperwhite, which starts at £129.99. This Kindle has some higher-tier fancy bells and whistles, such as Bluetooth (for audiobooks and waterproofing).
Unfortunately, the Readwise app isn't free, but I think this is also worth the investment. The price starts at £3.99 per month or annually for £69.99.
